Mumbai Police Expose Insurance Fraud Network, Arrest 12 From Fake Call Centres
Police expose fake call centres behind a major insurance fraud operation.
Mumbai Police have busted a major insurance fraud network involving three fake call centres and arrested 12 people allegedly involved in cheating policyholders by posing as representatives of HDFC ERGO Health Insurance. The Govandi Police action uncovered a cyber fraud operation in which criminals allegedly targeted customers with fake insurance-related offers and extracted sensitive financial information. Police seized assets and electronic equipment worth more than ₹17 lakh during the investigation.
The case was registered after a complainant approached Govandi Police on June 22, alleging that fraudsters contacted him while pretending to be insurance company officials. The accused allegedly offered to help process a "No Claim Bonus" of ₹1.53 lakh on his policy and used various excuses to obtain his credit card details. The fraudsters then carried out online transactions and allegedly withdrew ₹3.43 lakh from the victim’s account.
Following the complaint, police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. The cyber team of Govandi Police conducted a technical investigation that traced the fraudulent activities to a fake call centre operating from Kohinoor City Mall in Kurla (West). During the raid, six suspects were arrested, and investigators recovered computers, laptops, mobile phones, routers, SIM cards, and scripts allegedly used to deceive customers.

Further questioning of the arrested individuals revealed links to a larger network operating from multiple locations. Acting on the information received during interrogation, police carried out additional raids at Asalfa Village and Kohinoor Mall. These operations led to the arrest of more suspects and the shutdown of two additional fake call centres allegedly involved in similar insurance-related fraud activities.
In total, police arrested 12 accused persons and seized 29 computers, five laptops, 15 mobile phones, three routers, 15 SIM cards, fraudulent calling scripts, and 28.05 grams of gold allegedly purchased using money obtained through fraudulent transactions. The total value of the seized material has been estimated at ₹17.18 lakh, while investigators suspect that the group may have targeted insurance customers in several states through similar methods.
Police officials said further investigation into the network is underway and more arrests may follow as they trace additional links. Mumbai Police have also advised citizens to remain cautious when receiving unexpected calls regarding insurance policies and warned people not to share banking details, card information, CVV numbers, or OTPs with unknown callers. Citizens who suspect cyber fraud have been urged to immediately contact the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or report the matter to the nearest police station.
