Mumbai Local Train Murder: Victim’s Mother, Sister Demand Death Penalty For Accused

A 21-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death inside a Mumbai local train following a dispute over closing a compartment door during heavy rainfall, police said. The incident took place on Tuesday night on a Churchgate–Nallasopara fast local train while it was travelling between Goregaon and Kandivali stations, triggering shock among commuters and renewed concerns over passenger safety in the city’s suburban rail network.

The victim has been identified as Mayank Lohar, who was travelling in the first-class compartment when the altercation broke out. According to police officials, the argument began over whether the train’s compartment door should be kept open or shut during heavy rain, a common point of contention among passengers during Mumbai’s monsoon season. What started as a verbal exchange quickly escalated into a physical confrontation inside the moving train.

Investigators said the accused, identified as Roshan Suvarna, allegedly carried a large knife in his bag and pulled it out during the heated argument. He is said to have stabbed Lohar inside the compartment before passengers could intervene. The victim collapsed on the spot and succumbed to his injuries before medical assistance could be provided, officials confirmed.

A video recorded by fellow passengers has since surfaced, showing the immediate aftermath of the incident. In the footage, the accused can be seen walking away inside the coach while visibly shaken commuters react in shock. Voices in the background can be heard repeatedly stating that the victim had been killed. The video has circulated widely on social media, intensifying public outrage and raising questions about security checks and policing on suburban trains.

Lohar’s family has been left devastated by the sudden loss. His mother, speaking to reporters through tears, described him as a quiet young man who avoided conflicts and rarely stepped out unnecessarily. She repeatedly appealed for strict punishment against the accused and struggled to comprehend the circumstances of his death, saying her son had simply been returning from an ordinary journey when the tragedy occurred. Family members and relatives gathered at their residence expressed deep grief and demanded justice.

Police have arrested the accused and launched a detailed investigation into the case. Officials are examining eyewitness accounts, video evidence, and the sequence of events leading up to the fatal confrontation. Preliminary findings suggest that the dispute escalated rapidly in a confined space, leaving little time for intervention by other passengers. Authorities are also probing whether the accused had any prior criminal record and how the weapon was carried into the train.

The incident has once again brought attention to safety concerns on Mumbai’s suburban railway system, one of the busiest commuter networks in the world, carrying millions of passengers daily.
