Mother And Infant Son Found Dead In Well In Damoh

Mother and her six-month-old son found dead in a well in Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh district.

In a heartbreaking incident in Madhya Pradesh's Damoh district, the bodies of 35-year-old Jayanti Kewat and her six-month-old son, Devansh, were discovered floating in a municipal well on Saturday morning. The well is located in ward number 1 of the Tendukheda area, under local civic body jurisdiction. A municipal employee first spotted the bodies late Friday night or early Saturday and immediately alerted authorities. Police, aided by residents, swiftly recovered the remains and rushed them for post-mortem analysis to uncover the truth.

Jayanti, originally from Jharoli village in Damoh, had recently returned to her parental home in Tendukheda for her brother's 'terahvi' ritual, held days after his sudden death. Locals reported seeing her at home Friday evening, but she vanished soon after, prompting a frantic search. The well's proximity to her family's residence has raised questions about how the pair ended up there. Preliminary findings hint at possible desperation, as Jayanti had endured profound losses, including the deaths of two prior children.

For years, Jayanti battled severe health issues stemming from these tragedies, according to family and neighbors. Her mental and physical decline reportedly worsened after her brother's passing, adding layers to the mystery. Damoh Sub-Divisional Police Officer Archana Ahir confirmed to IANS that no suicide note was found, and foul play remains a possibility. The post-mortem reports, expected soon, could reveal drowning as the cause or evidence of external involvement.

The district administration has mobilized a full investigation, interviewing family members, witnesses, and municipal staff. Tendukheda residents expressed shock, describing Jayanti as a quiet, grieving mother. Security footage from nearby areas is being reviewed, and the well—often used for community water needs—has been cordoned off. Authorities urge the public to provide tips amid growing concerns over local safety.

This case echoes rising worries about mental health support in rural India, where personal losses can spiral unchecked. Similar incidents in Madhya Pradesh have highlighted gaps in counseling services post-tragedy. As the probe deepens, police aim to rule out homicide, with forensic teams analyzing the bodies for injuries or toxins. The community mourns while awaiting answers.

Damoh SDOP Ahir emphasized, "We are leaving no stone unturned; the exact circumstances will be clarified soon." Updates on the post-mortem and inquiry progress are anticipated within days. The incident serves as a grim reminder of hidden struggles behind closed doors in small-town India.
