Mona Singh Says Women Face Age Expiry in Industry Unlike Men in 60s

Mona Singh highlights age bias against women in Bollywood, unbothered by on-screen age.

Actor Mona Singh, who rose to fame with her breakout role in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, has spoken candidly about the gendered age biases prevalent in Bollywood. Singh, currently gearing up for her role in Kohrra 2, said she finds it odd that women in the industry are perceived to have an "expiry date", while male actors in their 60s continue to play romantic leads.

“I have never cared about my on-screen age. I really haven’t because I’m very confident, and I know who I am. There’s nothing to prove, which is why I keep taking risks,” Singh told PTI. She emphasized that the character’s depth and challenge excite her far more than traditional notions of age-appropriateness on screen.

Singh, 44, has enjoyed a career resurgence with acclaimed OTT performances in Netflix shows such as Kaala Paani, The Ba**ds of Bollywood*, and Prime Video’s Made in Heaven 2, along with film roles in Munjya, Happy Patel, and Border 2. She plays Dhanwant Kaur, a cop investigating a murder while grappling with personal tragedy, in the upcoming season of Kohrra, which premieres on Netflix on February 11.

Reflecting on her journey, Singh said she first felt she had "arrived" with her debut role in Jassi but now feels firmly grounded in her craft. She praised the team behind Kohrra 2 for their efficiency and warmth, noting that the series’ winter-set Punjab backdrop and compelling storytelling made joining the project a “magical” experience.

Kohrra 2 continues the story of Assistant Sub-Inspector Amarpal Garundi, played by Barun Sobti, now posted under Singh’s Dhanwant Kaur at Dalerpura Police Station. The season promises a fresh investigation and explores the personal struggles of both officers alongside their professional duties.

Singh’s candid remarks highlight ongoing discussions about age and gender in the entertainment industry, reinforcing her commitment to meaningful, challenging roles over conforming to industry stereotypes.
