Mobile Phone Snatcher Arrested, Tried and Convicted Within 12 Days in Delhi

A Delhi taxi driver's quick action leads to a phone snatcher's conviction within 12 days under the new BNS.

A 22-year-old mobile phone snatcher in the national capital has been arrested, tried, and convicted within just 12 days of the crime, highlighting what Delhi Police described as a fast-track approach to tackling street offenses under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) framework. Officials said the swift conclusion of the case reflects efforts to ensure quicker investigation and prosecution in incidents involving theft and public safety.

The incident took place on the afternoon of May 14 near Gandhi Market Gol Chakkar on Meer Dard Road in central Delhi. According to police, a taxi driver from Aligarh had parked his vehicle after dropping passengers and was waiting for his next booking when his Redmi Note 13 Pro mobile phone was suddenly snatched. The accused allegedly attempted to flee through the crowded market area immediately after committing the crime.

Police identified the accused as Mohammad Adil, a 22-year-old resident of Delhi. Officers said the suspect was chased and caught shortly after the incident, preventing his escape from the busy locality. The prompt action by people present at the scene, combined with immediate police intervention, reportedly played a key role in securing evidence and ensuring that the accused was produced before the court without delay.

According to Delhi Police officials, the investigation was completed in a time-bound manner with the help of streamlined procedures introduced under the new criminal law system. Officers collected witness statements, verified evidence related to the stolen phone, and completed the necessary legal formalities quickly. Authorities stated that the case was prioritized as part of a broader push to reduce delays in street crime investigations and improve conviction rates in petty but high-frequency offenses.

The accused was subsequently tried in court, where the proceedings were completed within days of the arrest. Police confirmed on Wednesday that Adil had been convicted, marking one of the fastest known conclusions to a street crime case in the city in recent months. Officials believe such quick disposal of cases can serve as a deterrent against crimes like mobile snatching, which remain common in crowded urban areas across Delhi.

Delhi Police officers said they are increasingly focusing on ensuring that street crime cases reach their logical conclusion without prolonged delays. Authorities believe rapid investigation and prosecution not only strengthen public confidence in law enforcement but also reduce the chances of repeat offenses by habitual criminals. The case has since been cited by police as an example of how the revised criminal justice framework can accelerate legal proceedings in straightforward offenses when evidence and witnesses are immediately available.
