Militants Burn Two Houses, Exchange Fire With Security Forces in Manipur's Kangpokpi District

Suspected militants attacked a hill village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district late Tuesday night, setting fire to at least two houses and engaging in an exchange of fire with security forces, officials said on Wednesday. The incident took place at Chawangkining Naga village around 10:30 p.m. on September 15, triggering fresh concern in the region, which has remained vulnerable to sporadic violence and armed attacks. The attack reportedly involved a large number of militants carrying sophisticated weapons, according to an official familiar with the incident.

The attackers allegedly entered the village during the night and torched at least two residential structures. Security forces stationed in or near the area responded after the exchange of fire began, although officials have not yet provided detailed information about the duration or intensity of the confrontation. The incident has raised questions about the movement of armed groups in the hill areas and the security arrangements in villages located in sensitive parts of the state.

The attack occurred only a few hours after two Kuki women were reportedly gunned down at Leisangphai in Tamenglong district. The proximity in timing between the two incidents has added to apprehensions over a possible escalation of violence across vulnerable districts of Manipur. Authorities are examining whether the incidents are connected, though no official confirmation regarding any link between the attacks has been issued so far.
