Mehbooba Questions BRICS’ Position On Gaza, Iran, Calls For Consistent Stand On Terrorism

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday welcomed the BRICS condemnation of the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack but questioned the grouping’s position on the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Her remarks came after BRICS leaders adopted the New Delhi Declaration on Saturday, which condemned the April 22, 2025, attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people and injured several others.

Mehbooba said India, as the current BRICS chair, should have demonstrated greater leadership by pushing for a resolution that also addressed the situation in Gaza and the conflict involving Iran. She alleged that Israel’s military actions in Gaza amounted to genocide and criticised the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, referring to the deaths of political leaders and schoolchildren in the conflict.

“Welcome the BRICS condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack,” Mehbooba said in a post on X. However, she questioned why the grouping did not adopt a similar position on the violence in Gaza and the strikes on Iran. She argued that international responses to terrorism and civilian deaths should be applied consistently, without distinctions based on nationality or geopolitical considerations.

“Terrorism cannot be condemned selectively,” the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said, stressing that civilian casualties should not be viewed differently depending on where they occur. She also argued that international justice should not operate according to what she described as double standards, placing her comments in the broader debate over how global groupings respond to conflicts and terrorism.

The BRICS leaders, in their New Delhi Declaration, condemned the Pahalgam attack and reiterated the need to combat terrorism in all its forms. The declaration called for stronger measures against the cross-border movement of terrorists, disruption of terror-financing networks and dismantling of safe havens used by terrorist groups.

The declaration’s condemnation of the Pahalgam attack came as India hosted the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, with terrorism and international security among the issues discussed by the grouping. Mehbooba’s comments have highlighted her view that BRICS should adopt a broader and more consistent position on terrorism and civilian casualties across different conflicts.
