May 7 Oath Likely for Vijay as TVK Negotiates Alliances to Cross Majority Threshold

TVK emerges largest; Vijay likely to form government tomorrow.

Tamil Nadu is witnessing a major political shake-up following the 2026 Assembly election results, with actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as the single-largest party in the 234-member state assembly. According to the latest results, TVK secured 108 seats, falling just short of the majority mark of 118 required to form the government.

Sources indicate that Vijay is likely to take oath as Chief Minister as early as May 7, as post-poll negotiations intensify in the state. The development marks a dramatic entry for the TVK leader, who has disrupted Tamil Nadu’s long-standing political dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. The election outcome has reshaped the state’s political landscape, positioning TVK as the central force in government formation talks.

In a significant development, the Congress party, which won 5 seats, has decided to extend its support to TVK, taking the alliance tally to 113 seats. However, the coalition still remains four seats short of the majority mark. TVK leaders are reportedly in discussions with smaller parties, including DMK allies CPI and CPI(M), both of which have secured two seats each, along with VCK, which has also won two seats.

The DMK, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, managed to secure only 59 seats in a major setback for the ruling party. Stalin also reportedly lost his stronghold seat of Kolathur to TVK, marking a symbolic defeat for the party. The AIADMK, meanwhile, finished with 47 seats, further highlighting the fragmentation of Tamil Nadu’s traditional two-party dominance.

Political observers say the coming days will be crucial as coalition arithmetic continues to evolve. If TVK successfully secures additional support from smaller parties or independents, Vijay’s path to forming the next government could become viable, marking one of the most significant political transitions in the state’s recent history.
