In a sweeping anti-drug operation, Punjab Police raided 501 locations across the state on Thursday, arresting 75 drug smugglers as part of an intensified campaign to curb the drug menace. The operation, directed by Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, saw the registration of 53 First Information Reports (FIRs) and brought the total number of arrests to 622 within six days. Authorities recovered 8.2 kg of heroin, 4.5 kg of opium, 1,294 intoxicant tablets or injections, and Rs 1.04 lakh in cash from the suspects.

The raids, executed by over 250 police teams comprising 1,700 personnel, targeted suspicious individuals and known drug hotspots. Special Director General of Police Arpit Shukla highlighted the state’s three-pronged strategy—enforcement, de-addiction, and prevention (EDP)—aimed at eradicating drugs from Punjab. This operation follows Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s ambitious three-month deadline to make Punjab drug-free, reflecting the government’s renewed resolve.

In a parallel move, the Amritsar Corporation, backed by Punjab Police, demolished properties of notorious drug traffickers Gurmeet Singh and Sandeep Singh alias Sonu. Gurmeet faces three cases with recoveries of 325 grams of smack and 350 grams of heroin, while Sandeep is linked to four cases, including charges by the Anti-Narcotics Force Mohali. Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar oversaw the demolitions, signaling a tough stance against drug-related assets.

Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, heading a sub-committee on the drug issue, reiterated the state’s zero-tolerance policy. “No one involved in this scourge or shielding offenders will be spared, regardless of their influence,” he warned during visits to Rupnagar, SBS Nagar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, and Tarn Taran. With aggressive enforcement and structural reforms, Punjab’s government is doubling down on its fight to reclaim the state from the grip of drugs.
