Mass Suicide In Ahmedabad! Family of Five, Including Three Children, Found Dead

Tragedy in Ahmedabad: Family of Five, Including Three Children, Found Dead in Suspected Mass Suicide

In a heart-wrenching incident that has left the city of Ahmedabad reeling, five members of a family, including three minor children, were found dead in their rented home in Bagodara village, Bavla taluka, on July 20, 2025. The police suspect the family died by suicide after consuming a poisonous substance, though the exact motive remains under investigation.

The deceased have been identified as Vipul Kanjibhai Vaghela, a 32- to 34-year-old rickshaw driver, his wife Sonal, aged 26, and their three children: Simran (also known as Karina), 11, Mayur, 8, and Prince (also known as Princy), 5. The family, originally from Dholka’s Devi Poojak Vas in the Barkotha area, had been living near the Bagodara bus station. The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, with police receiving an alert around 2 a.m.

According to Ahmedabad (Rural) Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Jat, preliminary investigations suggest the family ingested a poisonous liquid, leading to their deaths. The Bagodara police, along with a 108 ambulance team, rushed to the scene, and senior officials from the Local Crime Branch (LCB), Special Operations Group (SOG), and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) conducted an extensive investigation. The bodies were sent to the Bagodara Community Health Centre for post-mortem examination.

While some reports indicate that no suicide note was found, others suggest notes citing financial distress were recovered, pointing to overwhelming debt and pressure as possible reasons for the tragic decision.

Police Sub-inspector P N Gohil noted that the case is being treated as a mass suicide, with forensic teams collecting poison residues, food items, documents, and mobile phones to uncover any clues. The investigation includes digital analysis of the family’s mobile phones and social media accounts, as well as interviews with neighbors and the landlord, who reported no apparent signs of distress from the family prior to the incident.

This devastating event has drawn comparisons to other mass suicide cases, such as those in Delhi’s Burari and Haryana’s Panchkula, highlighting a broader concern about mental health awareness in India. The loss of three young children has particularly shocked the community, with neighbors describing the family as calm and untroubled. The police are exploring whether financial constraints, family disputes, or social pressures may have contributed to the extreme step.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The incident underscores the urgent need for accessible mental health resources and support systems to prevent such tragedies in the future.
