Married at 14, Maharashtra Girl Dies by Suicide; Husband Arrested

A 14-year-old girl in Mangalvedha Tehsil, Solapur district, Maharashtra, has died by suicide just four months after being forced into a child marriage with a 19-year-old man. The girl, who was subjected to mental and physical harassment, reportedly took the step after being driven to desperation by sustained abuse.

According to police, the minor marriage took place in the Bavchi and Nimboni areas of Mangalvedha Tehsil. The girl was burdened with household responsibilities beyond her age and was subjected to physical relations and mistreatment by her husband, which police say contributed to her tragic decision.

Dattatray Borigidde, Police Inspector at Mangalvedha Police Station, explained that the combination of her young age, the pressure of household chores, and the abuse by her husband led to her suicide. “The physical and mental harassment she was subjected to drove her to commit suicide,” he said, highlighting the severity of the exploitation.

The Mangalvedha Police have registered a case against five individuals, including the husband and father-in-law, on charges of abetting suicide. Both the husband and father-in-law have been arrested and remanded to police custody as investigations continue.

Authorities are conducting further inquiries into the incident, with an emphasis on preventing similar cases of child marriage and abuse. The tragedy has drawn attention to ongoing issues of child marriage in Maharashtra, where legal frameworks and social awareness continue to clash with entrenched local practices.

This case underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of child protection laws and awareness campaigns, as minors remain highly vulnerable to exploitation and abuse within early marriages.
