Manipur: Security Forces Recover Illegal Arms And Equipment During Kangpokpi Operation

Security forces recovered a large cache of illegal firearms, ammunition and communication equipment during a cordon-and-search operation in Manipur's Kangpokpi district, officials said. The operation was conducted at J Songtun village over the past 24 hours as part of the ongoing effort to remove unauthorised weapons from the state. The recovery included firearms, ammunition, wireless communication equipment and protective gear.

The operation was carried out by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel with support from CoBRA and Rapid Action Force (RAF) commandos and Manipur Police. During the search, the security forces recovered two country-made 12-bore guns and 14 other 12-bore firearms bearing different manufacturers' serial numbers and licence markings. A total of 1,225 rounds of 12-bore ammunition were also seized during the operation.

The forces additionally recovered six VHF or wireless communication sets along with three chargers. Other items seized included a Golden Antler telescope, 18 bulletproof vests and one pouch. Officials said the recovery formed part of a wider campaign being conducted by the CRPF and allied security personnel to identify and disrupt illegal weapon networks operating across Manipur.

The operation also led to a brief confrontation as security personnel were leaving the area. A group of villagers, predominantly women, reportedly blocked the road using stones and demanded that the seized firearms and ammunition be returned. Officials said the legitimacy of the weapons and ammunition had not been established at the time, and security personnel took measured action to bring the situation under control and prevent further disruption.

The recovery comes amid continued efforts by security agencies to advance the de-weaponisation process in Manipur. CRPF units and specialised formations such as CoBRA and RAF have been conducting search operations in areas where illegal arms are suspected to be present. Such operations are aimed at recovering unauthorised weapons and equipment and reducing the availability of arms that could contribute to further instability.

Officials described the Kangpokpi operation as part of a sustained security effort involving central and state forces. The seizure of firearms, ammunition, communication equipment and protective gear is expected to support ongoing efforts to neutralise illegal weapon networks and improve security conditions in the region. Further action will depend on the investigation into the origin and intended use of the recovered items.
