Man Sentenced to Life for Horrific Train Attack on Pregnant Woman
A 27-year-old habitual offender receives life imprisonment for attempting to rape and murder a pregnant woman on a train, causing her to lose her unborn child.
In a chilling case that shocked Tamil Nadu, the Tirupattur District and Sessions Court sentenced 27-year-old K Hemaraj to life imprisonment without parole on Monday for his brutal actions against a pregnant woman on February 6, 2025. The crime occurred aboard the Coimbatore–Tirupati Intercity Express, where Hemaraj allegedly attempted to rape the victim in the ladies’ coach after other passengers disembarked at Jolarpet station. He then pushed her off the moving train, leading to severe injuries and the tragic miscarriage of her unborn child on February 10—a loss that devastated the family, who had waited 18 years for their second child.
Judge S Meenakumari convicted Hemaraj under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempt to murder, causing grievous hurt, insulting a woman’s modesty, attempting to rape a pregnant woman, wrongful confinement, and causing the death of an unborn child. He was also found guilty under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. The trial, which began on June 9 after the chargesheet was filed on April 26, concluded with a conviction last Friday.
The court ordered Southern Railway and the Tamil Nadu government to pay Rs 50 lakh each as compensation to the victim and mandated the state to cover her lifelong medical expenses. Additionally, the judge directed Southern Railway to enhance safety by appointing female police personnel and installing surveillance cameras in ladies’ coaches across all trains in Tamil Nadu. Public Prosecutor PT Saravanan emphasized that the court barred any leniency, such as parole, for Hemaraj, ensuring he remains imprisoned for life.
