A Mahatma Gandhi statue located at Gandhi Circle in Haveri town was allegedly vandalised late on April 19, prompting police action and public outrage in the area. The incident reportedly took place between 11 pm and 11:50 pm, when the statue—erected in memory of Gandhi’s visit to the town—was damaged using a cement brick, according to preliminary findings shared by the police.

The damage came to light on the morning of April 21, when local residents noticed broken parts of the statue and immediately alerted authorities. The discovery quickly spread through the locality, leading to strong condemnation from citizens who described the act as disrespectful to Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy and demanded strict legal action against those responsible.

Following the complaint, Haveri town police launched an investigation and examined CCTV footage from the vicinity of Gandhi Circle to identify the suspect. Based on the evidence collected, police arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with the vandalism. Officials confirmed that the arrest was made after matching movement patterns captured on surveillance cameras with the time window of the incident.

Police further stated that the accused has been referred to the Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences for psychological evaluation and treatment. While the investigation is still ongoing, authorities have not ruled out further legal procedures depending on the medical assessment and forensic findings related to the case.

The incident has triggered concern among residents about the security of public monuments in the town. Authorities have assured that additional monitoring and preventive measures will be reviewed to avoid similar incidents in the future, while also maintaining that due process will be followed as per law.
