Mamata Banerjee Says Abhishek Suffered Chest Injuries, Alleges Hospitals Denied Treatment Under Pressure

Mamata claims Abhishek suffered chest blood clots and hospitals denied him treatment.

Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee came under attack during a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district on Saturday, prompting sharp reactions from senior party leaders and raising concerns over political violence in West Bengal. The Diamond Harbour MP had travelled to the area to meet party workers and families allegedly affected by post-election violence when he was confronted by protesters who shouted slogans, hurled eggs, and allegedly assaulted him.

Videos circulating on social media showed Banerjee wearing a white shirt and a cricket helmet while moving through a large crowd. Demonstrators were seen raising slogans, including "chor, chor" (thief, thief), as they surrounded and heckled the Trinamool Congress leader. The situation escalated as objects were allegedly thrown at him, forcing party workers and supporters to shield him while he continued with his visit despite the disruption.

Reacting to the incident, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that her nephew could have suffered far more serious injuries had he not been provided with protective headgear during the confrontation. She alleged that Banerjee sustained injuries to his chest and rib area due to stone-pelting and physical assault. Mamata Banerjee stated that medical examinations indicated multiple blunt-force injuries to his face, chest, neck, and back and questioned whether adequate security arrangements had been made despite prior information being provided to authorities regarding the visit.

The Trinamool Congress chief also criticized the handling of Banerjee's medical treatment following the incident. According to her, he was initially taken to a private hospital before being shifted to another medical facility in Kolkata. She alleged that pressure had been exerted on doctors and hospital authorities regarding his treatment, while maintaining that medical decisions should remain solely in the hands of healthcare professionals. Party leaders later said Banerjee would continue treatment under the supervision of trusted doctors and family physicians.

Abhishek Banerjee blamed the attack on political opponents and alleged that the violence was orchestrated by supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He claimed that inadequate police presence contributed to the situation and alleged that there had been an attempt to intimidate him politically. Several Trinamool Congress leaders also accused rivals of targeting party members following the party's electoral setback in the state. Police have reportedly arrested five individuals in connection with the incident.

The BJP rejected the allegations and offered a strong political response. BJP leader Keya Ghosh described the incident as a consequence of what she characterized as years of alleged political excesses under Trinamool Congress rule. The episode has intensified political tensions in West Bengal, where both parties continue to trade accusations over violence and law-and-order issues following the recent assembly elections. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident while political reactions remain sharply divided.
