Major Meth Seizure in Tripura: 1.6 Lakh Tablets Worth Rs 16 Crore Recovered

Assam Rifles and DRI seize 1.60 lakh methamphetamine tablets worth over Rs 16 crore in Tripura, arrest driver.

In a major anti-drug operation, Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), seized 1.6 lakh methamphetamine tablets worth over Rs 16 crore in Tripura. The driver of the truck carrying the contraband was arrested, and the vehicle was impounded, officials said on Sunday.

The operation was launched late Saturday night in Tripura’s Khowai district based on precise intelligence inputs about drug trafficking. The joint team intercepted the truck along National Highway-8, leading to the discovery of the highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba or party tablets.

Preliminary investigations suggest the consignment originated from Myanmar, passing through Mizoram and southern Assam before entering Tripura. Authorities suspect the drugs were intended for delivery to a major kingpin or for further smuggling into Bangladesh, given Tripura’s 856-km-long international border with the neighbouring country.

Methamphetamine tablets, which contain a combination of methamphetamine and caffeine, are banned in India due to their highly addictive nature. Users often refer to them as ‘crazy drug’. The seizure, made just ahead of Republic Day, is being hailed as a significant success in disrupting narcotics networks in the Northeast.

Tripura’s strategic location, surrounded on three sides by Bangladesh, makes it particularly vulnerable to smuggling and cross-border crimes. Assam Rifles officials highlighted that regular anti-drug operations in the region aim to dismantle organized networks and prevent contraband from entering India.

Further investigations are ongoing to identify the larger network involved in this major smuggling attempt. Authorities confirmed that the arrested driver is a resident of Sribhumi district in southern Assam, and detailed probes are underway to trace the origin and intended destination of the narcotics.
