Maharashtra Gives Autorickshaw, Taxi Drivers Until August 15 to Learn Marathi
Maharashtra launches a 100-day campaign for auto and taxi drivers to learn Marathi, with a deadline set for August 15.
The Maharashtra government on Tuesday announced a 100-day verification and enforcement campaign linked to its Marathi language mandate for autorickshaw and taxi drivers, giving operators time to comply before any immediate punitive measures are introduced. The move comes amid concerns raised by transport unions, which had requested additional time and objected to compulsory reading and writing tests.
State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said the drive will run across all 59 Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) from May 1 to August 15. During the campaign, authorities will inspect permits, licences, and illegal transport operations while also evaluating whether drivers possess a working knowledge of Marathi. Officials indicated that the focus in the initial phase would be compliance and awareness rather than strict penalties.
To monitor implementation, the government has formed a committee led by Ravindra Gaikwad. The panel will review progress through daily and weekly reports and issue instructions based on findings from the field. Authorities aim to standardise enforcement across districts and ensure transport operators are given adequate notice and support during the transition period.

The Marathi language requirement has sparked debate in Maharashtra, where a large number of taxi and autorickshaw drivers come from different linguistic backgrounds. Supporters say the policy will improve communication with local passengers and strengthen use of the state language, while critics warn it may burden workers already facing economic pressure. The government’s phased approach appears designed to balance enforcement with practical implementation before stricter action is considered after August 15.
