Ludhiana Mob Takes Law into Own Hands, Assaults and Humiliates Theft Suspect
Ludhiana mob assaults theft suspect, shaves head and writes 'I am thief' on chest.
A man suspected of mobile phone snatching was allegedly assaulted by a mob in the Kailash Nagar area of Ludhiana, triggering a police investigation after a disturbing video of the incident went viral on social media. Authorities have registered a case against unidentified individuals involved in the assault, while efforts are underway to identify both the victim and the accused persons.
According to police, the mob allegedly restrained the man by tying him to a pole and subjected him to humiliation and physical assault. A note was pasted on his chest that read “Main chor hun” (I am a thief), while his head and one eyebrow were reportedly shaved as part of the assault. The incident is believed to have taken place on Wednesday, though officials are still verifying the exact sequence of events.
Following the circulation of the video online, the Ludhiana Police took cognisance of the matter and registered an FIR at Basti Jodhewal police station. The case has been filed under sections related to wrongful restraint, causing hurt, and intentional insult, among other provisions of the law.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Balbir Singh, who is investigating the case, said police acted after the video gained attention on social media platforms. He noted that the identity of the victim has not yet been confirmed, and the suspects seen in the footage have also not been identified so far. Preliminary findings suggest the incident may have occurred after the man was suspected of involvement in a mobile phone snatching case.
Police officials have emphasised that regardless of the allegations, taking the law into one’s own hands is a punishable offence, and all individuals involved in the assault will be identified and brought to justice. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities examine video evidence and gather witness statements.
The incident has once again raised concerns over mob justice and public vigilantism, with law enforcement urging citizens to report suspected crimes to the police rather than resorting to violence. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
