Lucknow Police Arrest Man Impersonating IPS Officer After He Fled Rs 40 Tea Bill

Man impersonating IPS officer arrested in Lucknow for fleeing Rs 40 tea bill.

A man was arrested in Lucknow after allegedly impersonating an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, refusing to pay a ₹40 tea bill, and demanding “respect” from on-duty police personnel. The incident, which took place at a local tea stall, quickly escalated after the accused reportedly attempted to leave without paying and later insisted that police constables salute him, claiming he was posted as an IPS officer in Noida.

According to reports, the tea stall owner alerted the police after the man allegedly took a bun packet worth ₹40 without paying and behaved aggressively when questioned. A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the accused confronting police personnel and repeatedly demanding that they salute him, despite not presenting any official identification or proof of service.

When officers arrived at the scene and questioned him, the man reportedly showed no remorse and continued to assert that he was an IPS officer. Police personnel, however, refused to comply with his demands, stating that salutes are not given in civilian circumstances without proper uniform or valid identity proof. One constable is heard telling him that he must present official credentials before expecting any form of protocol-based respect.

Authorities confirmed that the man was unable to produce any identity card or documentation supporting his claim. Following verification, police detained him and initiated legal proceedings under relevant sections. The Lucknow Police also took to social media platform X to confirm that a case had been registered at Mahanagar Police Station and that the accused had been arrested.

The incident has drawn widespread attention online, particularly due to the behaviour displayed in the viral video. Many users praised the police constable’s calm and firm response, noting that he handled the situation professionally while adhering strictly to protocol. The exchange has since sparked discussion on impersonation of law enforcement officials and the importance of verifying credentials in public interactions.

Police officials stated that further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused has been involved in similar incidents in the past. The case continues to proceed under legal scrutiny as authorities examine all aspects of the impersonation and alleged theft at the tea stall.
