Kolkata Man Arrested in Mumbai for Dodging Promised Marriage

A Kolkata man was arrested in Mumbai for fleeing after promising marriage to a colleague and misleading her.

A 32-year-old man from Kolkata was arrested in Mumbai on Sunday after he allegedly entered into a physical relationship with a female colleague by promising marriage and then fled the city to evade the commitment, police said on Monday.

The accused and the complainant worked together at a private firm in the Kasba area of south Kolkata. According to the woman’s complaint, the two grew close over several months andmonths and frequently travelled together, and the man established sexual relations with her on the assurance that he would marry her. When she began pressing him to formalize the relationship, he started avoiding her and eventually stopped responding to calls and messages.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused abruptly resigned from his job in Kolkata, relocated to Mumbai, and joined a new company under a different address in an apparent attempt to sever all ties. After the woman lodged a complaint at Kasba police station alleging cheating and breach of promise to marry, a police team tracked him to his new workplace in Andheri, Mumbai, and took him into custody on Sunday evening.

The man has been charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating and criminal breach of trust. He is being brought back to Kolkata on transit remand for further questioning and legal proceedings. The case highlights a recurring pattern of complaints involving workplace relationships that turn sour over unfulfilled marital promises.
