Kharge Raises Questions Over PM Modi Not Addressing Opposition Demands
Congress President presses Prime Minister to respond to Opposition demands amid repeated parliamentary disruptions.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not responding to repeated demands raised by the Opposition in Parliament, accusing the government of avoiding accountability on key national issues. Kharge said the Opposition had sought structured discussions, but their concerns continued to be ignored.
Addressing reporters, Kharge said Opposition parties had consistently asked for debates on matters of public importance, including price rise, unemployment, alleged misuse of central agencies, and recent policy decisions. He argued that Parliament exists to hold the executive accountable and that dismissing Opposition demands weakens democratic processes.
The Congress Chief alleged that despite repeated notices and appeals, the Prime Minister had chosen not to engage directly with Opposition leaders. According to Kharge, this approach reflects a disregard for parliamentary conventions and undermines the spirit of dialogue that is essential for a functioning democracy.

Kharge further said disruptions in Parliament were a consequence of the government’s refusal to allow detailed discussions. He maintained that the Opposition was prepared for constructive debate, provided the government agreed to take up issues that directly affect citizens. “When genuine concerns are sidelined, protest becomes the only option left,” he said.
The remarks come amid frequent adjournments and sharp exchanges in both Houses of Parliament, with the Opposition pressing for assurances from the government on transparency and policy intent. The ruling party, however, has maintained that it is willing to discuss issues within parliamentary rules and accused the Opposition of stalling proceedings.
Reiterating the Congress party’s position, Kharge said the Opposition would continue to raise people’s issues inside and outside Parliament. He urged the Prime Minister to engage with elected representatives across party lines, stating that meaningful dialogue is essential to restore trust in parliamentary functioning and democratic institutions.
