Kerala’s Arthunkal Police Station Makes History with ISO Certification

First in India to earn prestigious quality recognition.

In a groundbreaking achievement, Arthunkal Police Station in Alappuzha district has become the first police station in India to receive ISO 9001:2015 certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The certification, awarded after a rigorous two-stage audit, recognizes the station’s excellence in quality and risk management, law enforcement, crime investigation, modern complaint handling, officer conduct, and station amenities.

The certificate was presented by Praveen Khanna, Deputy Director General (Southern Region), BIS, in the presence of State Police Chief Ravada A Chandrashekar, ADGP (Law & Order) H. Venkatesh, and other senior officials. The recognition is part of the Modernised Cherthala Police Programme, led by ASP Cherthala Harish Jain, IPS, which has significantly enhanced the station’s performance in crime prevention, investigation, law and order, traffic management, emergency response, judicial coordination, and public grievance redressal. These functions align with Indian legal frameworks, emphasizing efficiency, transparency, and public satisfaction.

This milestone comes amid criticism from opposition parties, including the Congress-led UDF and BJP, over Kerala’s worsening law and order situation. Recent incidents, including unchecked violence by CPI-M’s trade union wing during a statewide shutdown on Wednesday and assaults by SFI activists on police at Kerala University on Tuesday, have drawn scrutiny to the Kerala Police’s effectiveness.
