Kerala Student Pays ₹1.11 Lakh Fine After Honda City Shoots Flames in Bengaluru

Kerala student fined ₹1.11 lakh in Bengaluru for illegally modifying Honda City to shoot flames from exhaust.

A Kerala-based student driving a modified Honda City in Bengaluru has been fined ₹1.11 lakh after his car was found emitting flames from its exhaust. The incident came to light after Bengaluru City Traffic Police shared a video showing bursts of fire shooting out of the vehicle, a clear violation of Indian motor vehicle laws. Authorities immediately seized the car and initiated action through the Yelahanka Regional Transport Office (RTO).

The viral video released by the traffic police shows the dramatic exhaust flames, followed by a receipt confirming a penalty of ₹1,11,500. The clip ends with a police officer standing beside the seized vehicle, reinforcing the message that public roads are not meant for stunts. The department captioned the post with a sharp warning: “Fire from the exhaust? Expect the cost. Public roads aren't stunt posts.”

Officials reiterated that such exhaust modifications are illegal as they pose serious safety risks, increase emissions, and can distract or endanger other road users. Authorities stressed that enforcement will remain strict against drivers who treat public roads as racing tracks or stunt arenas, especially with rising incidents of dangerous vehicle alterations.

In India, car modifications are permitted only within strict legal boundaries. Changes must not affect the vehicle’s safety, structural integrity, noise levels, or emission standards. Legal modifications include ECU remapping (while maintaining emission compliance), approved aftermarket CNG kits, minor suspension changes, and adaptations for differently-abled drivers, provided all updates are registered with the RTO.

However, several modifications remain strictly illegal, including loud aftermarket exhausts, flame-throwing exhaust systems, pressure horns, dark window tints beyond permissible limits, bull bars, engine swaps without approval, and structural alterations. Authorities continue to warn motorists that violations can lead to hefty fines, vehicle seizure, and legal consequences, urging drivers to prioritise safety and compliance over showmanship.
