Kashmir Braces for Floods as Torrential Rains Hit Valley
Heavy rains trigger flood fears in Kashmir, prompting safety alerts.
Incessant rainfall across Kashmir on Tuesday has led to a dramatic surge in rivers and streams, raising concerns of potential flooding and prompting authorities to issue urgent advisories. The downpour, which significantly lowered daytime temperatures across the valley, has caused water levels in several water bodies to reach critical thresholds, with officials warning of possible cloudbursts and flash floods.
In the Betaab Valley of Pahalgam, the Sheshnag Nallah recorded an alarming water level of 6.02 feet, surpassing its previous record of 5.68 feet and exceeding the danger mark of 5.09 feet. Officials attribute this sudden spike to intense rainfall or a possible cloudburst in the upper reaches of the region. The Jhelum River, a vital waterway in the valley, is also at risk of rising until Tuesday evening due to the persistent rains, though water levels are expected to recede thereafter. Residents in low-lying areas have been urged to remain vigilant.
The meteorological department forecasts light to moderate rain across many parts of Kashmir on Tuesday, with moderate to heavy showers expected in southern regions. From August 27 to 29, brief spells of rain are likely at isolated locations, while moderate rain may occur from August 30 to September 1. In response to the inclement weather and the risk of intense rain, cloudbursts, or flash floods, authorities have issued a comprehensive advisory for the Kashmir Division, effective through September 1.

The advisory urges residents, particularly those in flood-prone, landslide-prone, and low-lying areas, to avoid venturing near hill slopes and water bodies until conditions stabilize. Tourists, shikara operators, sand miners, and others working near the Jhelum River, its tributaries, or other water bodies have been cautioned against crossing or operating without confirming safe conditions. The authorities emphasized the need for heightened caution to prevent accidents and ensure public safety during this period of adverse weather.
As Kashmir braces for continued rainfall, the region remains on high alert, with officials closely monitoring water levels and weather patterns to mitigate risks to life and property.
