Karnataka’s Biggest Bank Heist Busted: 15 Arrested in Rs 53.26 Crore Canara Bank Robbery!

Vijayapura police nab 12 more suspects, recover Rs 39.26 crore in gold and cash from a meticulously planned heist led by ex-bank manager.

In a major breakthrough, Vijayapura police arrested 12 additional suspects on Friday in the daring Rs 53.26 crore heist at Canara Bank’s Managuli branch, bringing the total arrests to 15. The robbery, executed on May 25, 2025, involved the theft of 58.97 kg of gold ornaments (net weight 40.7 kg) and Rs 5.2 lakh in cash from the bank’s locker in Basavana Bagewadi taluk, police said.

Led by former branch manager Vijayakumar Miriyala, arrested last month alongside Chandrashekhar Nerella and Sunil Narasimhalu Moka, the gang meticulously planned the heist since February. Miriyala, transferred to Ronihal branch on May 9, allegedly provided duplicate keys to his accomplices, who disabled CCTV cameras, cut power lines, and used a railway truck for transport to evade detection. They even left “black magic” items like a doll and vermilion to mislead investigators, tactics inspired by heist films and YouTube tutorials on lock-breaking and gold melting, according to Superintendent of Police Lakshman Nimbargi.

Police recovered 39 kg of melted gold and jewellery, Rs 1.16 crore in cash from Goa’s Majestic Pride Casino, five vehicles, fake keys, gas cylinders, and walkie-talkies. The latest arrests include three railway employees, a Ph.D. computer science lecturer, a biotechnology postgraduate, and an electronics expert, revealing the gang’s diverse expertise. Efforts continue to recover the remaining loot.
