Karnataka Medical Student Dies By Suicide Amid Alleged Affair Rumours Involving Professor
Karnataka med student dies by suicide over professor affair rumours.
A 22-year-old final-year Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) student tragically died by suicide at her residence, reportedly driven by relentless rumours spread by classmates about an alleged affair with a professor.
Nikhitha M U, studying at Raghavendra Ayurvedic College in Malladihalli, had developed a cordial professional relationship with her lecturer, Dr. Raju, according to her father’s police complaint. Classmates allegedly twisted this rapport into malicious gossip, circulating claims of a romantic involvement that subjected Nikhitha to constant taunts and public humiliation. The emotional toll proved unbearable despite her family’s efforts to counsel her.
On Wednesday around 11 a.m., Nikhitha took her own life, leaving behind a suicide note that explicitly outlined her distress from the harassment. Her father, Umashankar G N, a local headmaster, filed a formal complaint naming the accused classmates and demanding legal action against them for abetment to suicide. Police have registered the case and are investigating the allegations.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the devastating impact of peer bullying and unfounded rumours in academic environments, particularly within India’s competitive medical education sector. Ayurvedic colleges like Raghavendra, which train students in traditional Indian medicine, often foster close faculty-student interactions for practical learning, making such relationships vulnerable to misinterpretation. Nikhitha’s case highlights how quickly professional bonds can be weaponized to cause harm.
Authorities are yet to comment on potential disciplinary measures against the college or the named students, as the probe continues. Mental health experts emphasize the need for robust anti-bullying policies and counseling services in educational institutions to prevent similar tragedies. Nikhitha’s family seeks justice, hoping her death sparks systemic change.
The incident has drawn attention amid a pattern of recent controversies in Karnataka’s medical colleges, including separate cases of student suicides and faculty misconduct allegations, though no direct links exist. As the community mourns, calls grow for safer, more supportive campus cultures nationwide.
