Kanpur Class 8 Student Seriously Injured After Being Dragged Under Car

A 14-year-old Class 8 student was allegedly dragged for nearly 20-25 metres under a car in Kanpur's Kalyanpur area before the driver stopped the vehicle, left the injured boy by the roadside and fled, police said. The incident took place near Awas Vikas-1 on Wednesday evening and sparked public outrage after details of the incident emerged. The boy was riding his bicycle close to his home at around 6 pm when the car allegedly approached him and hit the bicycle. CCTV footage from the area reportedly captured the incident, showing the vehicle striking the boy before he became trapped underneath it.

According to the footage, the car continued moving after the collision, dragging the boy along the road for several metres. The vehicle eventually stopped, following which the driver allegedly left the injured student by the roadside and fled from the scene instead of remaining there or assisting him. The injured boy was subsequently taken for medical treatment. The circumstances of the accident and the extent of his injuries are being examined by authorities. The incident has also raised concerns over road safety and the conduct of motorists involved in accidents, particularly when pedestrians or cyclists are seriously injured.

Police identified the alleged driver as Ashish Diwakar. He was arrested on Thursday following public anger over the incident. Investigators are examining the CCTV footage and other available evidence as part of the probe into the collision and the driver's alleged decision to flee after leaving the boy on the roadside. The accident occurred in a residential area where the boy was reportedly cycling near his home. The CCTV footage is expected to form an important part of the investigation, particularly in establishing how the collision occurred, how far the vehicle travelled after hitting the boy and what happened immediately after the driver stopped.
