Journalists Attacked in Trimbakeshwar Ahead of Kumbh Mela Coverage

Journalists assaulted in Trimbakeshwar over entry fee dispute.

A violent incident in the temple town of Trimbakeshwar, Nashik, has left three journalists from prominent news channels injured after an alleged assault by a group of men on Saturday. The attack, reportedly triggered by a dispute over a mandatory vehicle entry fee, has raised concerns about the safety of media personnel covering significant events like the upcoming Kumbh Mela.

The victims, identified as Yogesh Khare of Zee News Taas, Kiran Tajne of Pudhari News, and Abhijeet Sonawane of Saam TV, were traveling to Trimbakeshwar to report on a meeting of seers when the altercation occurred.

According to a police official, the journalists’ vehicle was stopped by men working for a contractor appointed by the Trimbakeshwar Municipal Council, demanding payment of the entry fee. An argument ensued, escalating into a physical attack involving sticks and umbrellas. One journalist sustained serious injuries and was admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

Maharashtra’s State Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Chhagan Bhujbal, condemned the attack and met with one of the injured journalists at the hospital. He directed the Nashik Superintendent of Police and District Collector to take stringent action against the perpetrators.

The Trimbakeshwar police have launched an inquiry, and the process to register a case is underway, with authorities vowing to hold those responsible accountable.
