Jeweller Gunned Down in Daring Surat Robbery; One Suspect Caught

A jewellery store owner was killed and another injured during a violent robbery in Surat, with one culprit nabbed by locals.

A brazen robbery at Shrinathji Jewellers in Surat’s Sachin area turned deadly on Monday night when armed robbers shot and killed the store owner, Ashish Rajpara, and injured a bystander, police reported.

Around 8:30 pm, four armed robbers stormed the showroom, targeting its valuables. When Rajpara attempted to intervene, the robbers fired two shots into his chest, fatally wounding him. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Nirav Gohil.

As the robbers fled, locals gave chase, prompting the culprits to open fire again, injuring Nazim Shaikh in the leg. Undeterred, the crowd apprehended one of the robbers after a brief pursuit, though three others escaped. The captured suspect was assaulted by the mob before being handed over to police and is now receiving medical treatment, Gohil added.

In their haste to escape, the fleeing robbers abandoned a bag of looted valuables near the showroom, which locals returned to Rajpara’s family. Authorities are unsure if additional bags were taken and have launched a manhunt to track down the remaining suspects.

“We’ve formed special teams to apprehend the escaped robbers,” Gohil stated, as investigations continue to uncover the full extent of the crime.

The incident has sent shockwaves through Surat’s business community, raising concerns about rising violent crime in the city.
