Jan Suraj Leaders Defect to BJP Ahead of Bankipur Bypoll, Jolting Prashant Kishor

Several Jan Suraj Leaders Join BJP Ahead of July 30 Bankipur Bypoll

The Jan Suraj Party, led by political strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor, suffered a setback ahead of the Bankipur Assembly bypoll after several of its leaders joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday. The political development comes just days before the July 30 by-election, in which Kishor is set to contest against BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha in one of the party's traditional strongholds. The bypoll was necessitated after BJP national president Nitin Nabin vacated the seat following his nomination to the Rajya Sabha.

The defections come shortly after Kishor criticised the BJP for changing its Bankipur candidate after he filed his nomination papers. Taking a swipe at the ruling party, Kishor had claimed the BJP was forced to replace its nominee despite previously expressing confidence that it could win the seat regardless of the candidate. However, the political narrative shifted after multiple Jan Suraj leaders announced their decision to leave the party and join the BJP.

Among those who switched sides were noted mathematician K.C. Sinha, Ritesh Ranjan alias Bittu Singh, Gopal Singh and Jan Suraj's Kisan Morcha district president Braj Kishore Sinha. Several of the leaders had contested the previous Bihar Assembly elections on Jan Suraj Party tickets. Bittu Singh had contested from the Digha Assembly constituency, while his wife Vineeta, who also joined the BJP, had previously contested the mayoral election. K.C. Sinha and Gopal Singh had contested from Kumhrar and Maner constituencies respectively.

The leaders were formally inducted into the BJP by the party's Bihar state president Sanjay Saraogi. Welcoming the new entrants, Saraogi said they were inspired by the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP's policies. He claimed that politicians from opposition parties across the country were increasingly choosing to join the BJP because of its governance model and national vision.

Explaining his decision, K.C. Sinha said national interest was the foremost priority amid the current global geopolitical situation and stressed the need to strengthen the central government. Gopal Singh described his return to the BJP as a "homecoming," stating that he had previously worked for the party during the 1990s. He alleged that the Jan Suraj Party lacked a clear vision and organisational direction, while Ritesh Ranjan Singh apologised for having joined the party earlier, saying his decision had been taken in the heat of the moment.

The latest defections are expected to add a new political dimension to the Bankipur by-election campaign, which has already witnessed sharp exchanges between the BJP and Prashant Kishor. With polling scheduled for July 30, both parties are expected to intensify their campaigns in the coming days as they seek to secure victory in one of Bihar's closely watched electoral contests.
