Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Train Flagged Off, Public Services Begin May 2

Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat train launched, improving connectivity and boosting tourism in Kashmir.

The launch of a direct Vande Bharat train service connecting Jammu and Srinagar has been widely welcomed by local residents, pilgrims, and tourists, who say the development will significantly improve connectivity and reduce travel challenges in the region. The high-speed train service, flagged off by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday, is set to begin regular operations for the public from May 2.

Passengers and locals expressed optimism about the new service, highlighting its potential to ease congestion on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which is often affected by heavy traffic and weather-related disruptions. Many noted that the train would provide a reliable alternative to road travel, especially during peak tourist seasons. Students and working professionals are also expected to benefit from more predictable and time-efficient travel options.

Travellers pointed out that the service would help reduce dependence on costly air travel, making journeys more affordable for a larger section of the population. Some passengers said the existing Srinagar-Katra Vande Bharat service had already improved mobility in the region, and the extension to Jammu would further strengthen connectivity. They also expressed hope that improved transport links would contribute to a steady increase in tourist inflow.

Officials from the Government Railway Police (GRP) said extensive security arrangements have been put in place along the route to ensure passenger safety. SSP GRP Kashmir Wasim Qadri stated that around 2,000 CCTV cameras have been installed for surveillance, along with drone monitoring. Additionally, security personnel have been deployed at regular intervals of approximately every 2 kilometres, supported by watchtowers to maintain constant vigilance along the track.

Railway authorities described the launch as a major milestone for the region’s infrastructure development. Kapil Sharma, Chief Area Manager, Kashmir Northern Railway, said the service offers higher passenger capacity, improved comfort, and cost-effective travel. He noted that while the main inauguration ceremony was held in Jammu, the departure of the train from Srinagar marked a “joyful day” for people across Kashmir and the rest of the country.

The new train service is expected to boost tourism, facilitate smoother movement of pilgrims, and enhance economic activity in the region. With improved connectivity and enhanced security measures, the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat corridor is being seen as a significant step toward integrating the region more closely with the national transport network.
