Jammu on Edge After Pigeon Delivers IED Threat
Security tightened after bird delivers chilling message.
A pigeon carrying a threatening note to detonate the Jammu railway station with an improvised explosive device (IED) was intercepted by security forces in the Katmaria area along the International Border (IB) in RS Pura, Jammu district, officials reported on Thursday. The incident, which occurred around 9 pm on August 18, has prompted a significant escalation in security measures across the region, with authorities treating it as a potential act of cross-border provocation.
The bird, believed to have flown in from Pakistan, had a chit tied to its claws containing a message in Urdu and English, referencing “Kashmir Freedom” and phrases like “Time has come.” This marks the first recorded instance of a pigeon carrying a direct threat letter across the IB, though Pakistan has previously used balloons and other means to send messages into Indian territory. Security agencies are investigating whether the incident is a prank or part of a calculated conspiracy, given ongoing anti-India threats in the region.
In response, police have bolstered security around the Jammu railway station and its tracks, deploying dog squads, bomb disposal teams, and additional personnel to ensure public safety. Local police are on high alert, conducting thorough sweeps of the area to rule out any immediate threats. A senior police officer confirmed the seizure of the pigeon and the note, emphasizing that no risks are being taken.

Security experts suggest the pigeon may have been trained and deliberately released from across the border, a tactic not uncommon in espionage or psychological operations. “Such incidents demand serious attention,” an expert noted, underscoring the need for vigilance. The investigation continues to determine the origins and intent behind the unusual threat, as Jammu remains on edge amid heightened border tensions.
