Iran Alleges Striking USS Abraham Lincoln; Pentagon Says Carrier Unharmed

Iran asserts it struck USS Abraham Lincoln but U.S. officials say the claim is false.

Conflicting claims over the status of the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln have circulated amid escalating tensions involving Iran and the United States. On March 1, 2026, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) publicly asserted that its forces had struck the carrier with multiple ballistic missiles during recent military operations. The statement suggested the carrier was damaged and forced to withdraw from the Gulf region.

U.S. authorities have categorically denied Tehran’s claims. The Pentagon and U.S. Central Command stated that Abraham Lincoln was not hit by Iranian missiles and remains operational, continuing to participate in military activities as part of Operation Epic Fury. Pentagon officials described the Iranian allegations as inaccurate and misleading, adding that the reported missiles “weren’t even close” to the vessel.

Independent verification of either account is lacking. No neutral media or independent military observers have confirmed that the Abraham Lincoln sustained damage from Iranian strikes. Analysts and fact‑checkers have also flagged the spread of unverified social media posts and AI‑generated visuals purporting to show the carrier on fire or sinking, none of which have been authenticated.

Context for these assertions includes broader regional tensions: earlier in the conflict, U.S. military forces shot down an Iranian Shahed‑139 drone approaching the carrier while it was operating in the Arabian Sea, an episode that reflects the heightened risk environment but did not involve damage to the ship itself.

The Abraham Lincoln, a Nimitz‑class aircraft carrier, has been deployed as part of a larger U.S. naval presence intended to deter further escalation and support allied operations in the Middle East. Its movements and engagements have been closely watched amid the ongoing confrontation between Iran and U.S. and allied forces.

At present, the most reliable information indicates that the carrier has not been struck or damaged by Iranian missiles. The U.S. military’s denial of the IRGC’s claims, combined with a lack of independent evidence supporting Tehran’s account, suggests that assertions of a successful strike remain unverified.
