Indonesian Peacekeeper Killed in Israeli Strike on UNIFIL Base in Lebanon
Indonesian UN peacekeeper killed, others injured in Lebanon artillery attack.
An Indonesian peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed Sunday after Israeli artillery struck the Indonesian unit’s headquarters in the southern village of Adshit al-Qusayr. The attack also left several UNIFIL personnel injured, prompting helicopters to be dispatched to the site for emergency response.
The incident occurred amid ongoing exchanges of fire along the Lebanon-Israel border, as tensions continue to escalate in southern Lebanon. UNIFIL condemned the attack, stating, “A peacekeeper was tragically killed last night when a projectile exploded in a UNIFIL position near Adchit Al Qusayr. Another was critically injured. No one should ever lose their life serving the cause of peace.”
UNIFIL called on all parties to uphold their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety of UN personnel and property. The mission added that deliberate attacks on peacekeepers constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701, potentially amounting to war crimes. “Too many lives have been lost on both sides of the Blue Line in this conflict. There is no military solution. The violence must end,” the statement said.
The Indonesian government confirmed the death of one of its peacekeepers and reported that three others were injured. In a statement, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry expressed “deepest condolences” to the family of the fallen officer and affirmed its commitment to providing medical care to the injured personnel and ensuring the prompt repatriation of the deceased.
Indonesia also condemned the shelling, calling for a “thorough and transparent investigation” into the incident. The Ministry urged all parties to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty, cease attacks on civilians and infrastructure, and return to dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further escalation of violence.
This attack marks a tragic reminder of the risks faced by UN peacekeepers in volatile regions. UNIFIL and Indonesia have reiterated the importance of safeguarding personnel who serve in international peacekeeping missions, emphasizing that attacks on peacekeepers undermine efforts to maintain stability and security in Lebanon.
