IndiGo Cancels Tbilisi and Almaty Flights Over Iran Situation

IndiGo cancels flights to Tbilisi and Almaty, with some routes adding Doha refuelling stop due to Iran tensions.

IndiGo on Sunday announced the cancellation of several international flights due to escalating tensions in Iran, citing passenger safety as its primary concern. Services scheduled for January 25 from Delhi to Tbilisi, Georgia, and Mumbai to Almaty, Kazakhstan, along with their return flights, have been cancelled, the airline said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The airline also warned that flights scheduled on January 26 to and from Tbilisi, Almaty, Baku (Azerbaijan), and Tashkent (Uzbekistan) may make unscheduled halts in Doha, Qatar, for refuelling. IndiGo described these measures as “proactive adjustments” to ensure operational safety amid the evolving situation in the Middle East.

Tensions between Iran and the United States have heightened over recent weeks, with both sides exchanging warnings. Aviation experts have noted that the region’s airspace could become volatile, prompting airlines worldwide to reroute or temporarily suspend flights passing through or near Iranian airspace.

Passengers affected by the cancellations have been advised to contact IndiGo for refunds or rescheduling. The airline emphasized that safety remains its top priority, and decisions regarding flights will continue to be guided by real-time geopolitical developments.

Industry analysts note that disruptions to flights in and out of Central Asia and the Caucasus could have a broader impact on international travel and cargo movement, particularly for airlines connecting Europe and South Asia. IndiGo joins a growing list of carriers taking precautionary measures amid regional instability.

The airline assured travellers that updates regarding future operations will be communicated promptly, including alternative routes and logistical support, as the situation around Iran continues to evolve. Authorities have also urged passengers to monitor travel advisories issued by the Ministry of External Affairs and international aviation bodies.
