IndiGo, Akasa Air Warn Of Flight Disruptions As Heavy Rain Batters Mumbai

Heavy rains disrupt Mumbai flights; airlines issue travel advisories.

Heavy monsoon rains continued to disrupt air travel in Mumbai on Monday, prompting major airlines to issue travel advisories as flight operations were affected across the city's airport. According to airport officials quoted by ANI, 17 flights were cancelled and 217 flights, including arrivals and departures, were delayed between midnight and 11:30 am due to adverse weather conditions. The disruptions came as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) maintained a red alert for Mumbai following intense rainfall over the weekend.

The IMD issued the red alert after several parts of Mumbai recorded between 200 mm and more than 300 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period, leading to widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruptions to public transport. The persistent downpour has significantly impacted normal life across the city, with authorities urging residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel as heavy rain is expected to continue.

IndiGo advised passengers travelling to and from Mumbai and Pune to check the status of their flights before leaving for the airport. In its travel advisory, the airline said heavy rainfall could affect both flight schedules and road connectivity to the airport. "We recommend checking your flight status on our website or app before heading out. Also, please allow extra time for your commute, as slow-moving traffic may affect road travel en route to the airport," the airline said, thanking passengers for their patience during the weather-related disruptions.

Akasa Air also cautioned that several flights across its network could be delayed because of heavy rain in Mumbai, Pune and Goa. In a statement posted on X, the airline said the weather conditions were beyond its control but assured passengers that its teams were available to provide assistance. It urged travellers to verify their flight status before proceeding to the airport to avoid inconvenience caused by schedule changes.

While an official at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport said flight operations were continuing smoothly and reported no weather-related cancellations on Monday, the official confirmed that one IndiGo flight, 6E-594 operating from Raipur to Mumbai, had been diverted to Hyderabad due to the prevailing weather. However, separate information cited by ANI indicated that, as of 11:30 am, 17 flights had been cancelled and 217 delayed because of the adverse conditions, reflecting the evolving operational impact of the heavy rainfall.

The latest spell of monsoon rain has also intensified concerns over Mumbai's civic infrastructure after a series of rain-related incidents reportedly claimed at least nine lives, including six people in a building collapse. Other fatalities have been linked to electrocution, open manholes and falling trees. The opposition has criticised the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra government over the city's preparedness for the monsoon season, alleging inadequate measures to address dangerous buildings and urban flooding. As heavy rain continues, authorities have advised residents to monitor official weather updates, exercise caution and expect further disruptions to transport and other essential services.
