India’s Sudarshan Chakra: Unbreakable Shield by 2035

Massive tri-services effort to build India’s missile defence.

India is set to revolutionize its national security with Mission Sudarshan Chakra, an ambitious indigenous air defence system aimed at creating an impregnable shield by 2035, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan announced. Speaking at the Ran Samwad conference at the Army War College in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, Gen Chauhan emphasized that the project will require a monumental tri-services effort, integrating the Army, Navy, and Air Force to develop a robust infrastructure of missiles, surveillance systems, and advanced technologies.

Drawing inspiration from Israel’s Iron Dome, Sudarshan Chakra will protect vital military and civilian installations, including hospitals, railways, and religious sites, while also enabling precision counterstrikes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the project on August 15, 2025, during his Independence Day address, citing escalating security threats from Pakistan and China, particularly after Pakistan’s Army Chief reportedly threatened Indian assets like Reliance’s Jamnagar refinery.

Gen Chauhan highlighted the need for a “whole of the nation” approach, involving multi-domain integration of Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) across ground, air, maritime, undersea, and space domains. The system will leverage cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, data analytics, and directed-energy weapons to counter threats such as ballistic missiles, drones, and cyber-attacks. “A colossal amount of integration is required to network multiple fields for a true picture,” he stated, underscoring the complexity of fusing sensors and systems.

Building on successes like Operation Sindoor in May 2025, where India’s air defence grid thwarted Pakistani drone and missile attacks, Sudarshan Chakra will enhance existing systems like the S-400 Triumf, Akash, and DRDO’s Project Kusha. The latter, set for completion by 2028–30, includes long-range interceptors rivaling global standards. The project aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, emphasizing indigenous R&D and manufacturing.

The Ran Samwad conclave, a first-of-its-kind tri-service dialogue curated by the Integrated Defence Staff and Army Training Command, will see Defence Minister Rajnath Singh deliver the plenary address. The event, featuring joint doctrines and a technology roadmap, underscores India’s push for self-reliance and strategic deterrence in a volatile region. As Sudarshan Chakra takes shape, it signals India’s resolve to safeguard its skies and assert technological dominance.
