Indian Railways Ticket Checking Drive From October 1, Documents Passengers Must Carry
Original ID becomes crucial for concession and quota bookings.
Central Railway will conduct a special ticket-checking drive across its network from October 1 to October 31, with particular attention on concessional tickets, specified reservation quotas, railway passes and group bookings. The exercise will cover stations as well as local trains. Railway authorities have appealed to passengers to carry valid tickets and the necessary documents and cooperate with ticket-checking staff during the drive.
The month-long checking exercise will go beyond identifying passengers travelling without tickets. Officials will also verify whether passengers using concessions, designated reservation quotas or railway passes meet the eligibility requirements. Unreserved tickets will also be checked more closely, with staff able to use the TTE App where required to verify ticket details and authenticity.
Passengers travelling on concession tickets or under specified reservation quotas should carry the original identity document required to establish their eligibility. Documents accepted under railway rules include Aadhaar, passport, PAN card, driving licence, voter photo identity card and photo identity cards issued by the Central or State Government. Recognised school or college student identity cards with photographs, nationalised bank passbooks with photographs and bank-issued credit cards with laminated photographs are also among the listed documents.

Passengers are advised to carry the original document rather than relying solely on a photocopy or an image stored on a mobile phone. Ticket-checking staff may ask travellers to produce the prescribed proof during the journey. If passengers are unable to establish their eligibility for a concession or reservation quota, action may be taken under the applicable railway rules.
The requirement also applies to group bookings. According to Central Railway CPRO Dr Swapnil Nila, when several passengers are travelling under a single booking, at least one passenger named on the ticket must carry the prescribed original identity proof. If the required proof is not produced, passengers travelling on that ticket may be treated as travelling without a valid ticket under the applicable rules.
Passengers using E-Passes or Privilege Ticket Orders will also be subject to document verification. They must carry the prescribed original identity proof and ensure that the E-Pass or PTO has been properly exchanged or converted into the required Authority To Travel before starting the journey. The minimum excess charge for ticketless or unauthorised travel has also increased from Rs 250 to Rs 500 from June 20, 2026, following changes under the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026.
