Indian-Origin Father Dies After 8-Hour ER Wait in Canada Hospital
Indian-origin man Prashant Sreekumar dies of cardiac arrest after 8-hour wait in Canadian hospital ER.
A 44-year-old Indian-origin man, Prashant Sreekumar, tragically died of suspected cardiac arrest after waiting for over eight hours in the emergency room at Grey Nuns Hospital in Edmonton, Canada, according to a report by Global News. Prashant began experiencing severe chest pains while at work on December 22 and was immediately taken to the hospital by a client.
Upon arrival, Prashant was triaged and seated in the waiting room, where he was later joined by his father, Kumar Sreekumar. “He told me, ‘Papa, I cannot bear the pain,’” Kumar recalled. Despite reporting pain as severe as 15 out of 10, hospital staff reportedly conducted only an electrocardiogram and provided Tylenol while he continued to wait for treatment.
Over the next eight hours, Prashant’s condition worsened. Nurses monitored his blood pressure, which climbed dangerously high, yet he was not moved promptly to a treatment area. Once called in, Prashant collapsed almost immediately, despite emergency efforts to revive him, and was pronounced dead from an apparent cardiac arrest.

Prashant leaves behind his wife and three children aged three, 10, and 14. Family and friends remember him as a devoted father and a caring individual. “He was so nice, so full of life, and dedicated to his family,” Kumar said, expressing the profound grief of losing him in such circumstances.
Community members, including family friend and accounting client Varinder Bhullar, have voiced shock and disappointment over the hospital’s handling of the case. “We expect better from the healthcare system. This is a huge loss for our community,” Bhullar said.
Covenant Health, which runs Grey Nuns Hospital, stated that it could not comment on specific patient care due to privacy concerns but confirmed the case is under review by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Meanwhile, Prashant’s family continues to mourn the devastating loss, haunted by the circumstances of his death.
