India Targets Asia Cup Comeback and World Cup Berth in Rajgir

India’s hockey team aims for Asia Cup win and World Cup spot after 8 years.

The Indian men’s hockey team, three-time champions and reigning Olympic bronze medalists, is brimming with confidence as they prepare to compete in the Asia Cup, starting August 29 in Rajgir, Bihar. With their sights set on ending an eight-year title drought since their 2017 victory in Dhaka, the team, ranked number one in Asia, is determined to clinch the continental crown and secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands from August 14 to 30.

Chief Coach Craig Fulton expressed optimism about the team’s prospects, emphasizing a strategy reminiscent of their successful Paris Olympics campaign. “Our preparation has been solid, and our approach will mirror the Olympics, starting with strong wins in the pool stage,” Fulton said upon arriving in Rajgir. “We are aware it’s been eight years since our last Asia Cup win in 2017, and while we are confident, we will not underestimate any opponent.” India, led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, has fielded a formidable squad to navigate the high-stakes tournament, where a top finish guarantees a World Cup berth.

This marks the first time the Indian men’s hockey team will play in Rajgir, a significant milestone for the sport in Bihar. Fulton highlighted the opportunity to inspire new fans, stating, “It’s exciting to bring international hockey to Bihar. We aim to showcase our game and create more supporters for the sport in this region.” Captain Harmanpreet echoed this sentiment, noting the region’s growing role in hockey. “Rajgir hosting its second international tournament within a year reflects the government’s commitment to the sport. We’re thrilled to play here and look forward to the fans’ support,” he said.
