INDIA Bloc Faces Questions As DMK-Congress Tensions Emerge Ahead Of UP Polls
DMK-Congress rift raises questions over INDIA bloc unity
Tensions within the Opposition INDIA bloc have intensified amid reports of a widening rift between the Congress and its key regional ally, the DMK, raising fresh questions over the alliance’s cohesion ahead of crucial upcoming elections. The developments come in the backdrop of shifting political equations in southern and eastern India, with party alignments reportedly undergoing significant realignment.
According to political sources, the Congress’s decision to engage with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in Tamil Nadu has triggered strong resentment within the DMK. The move is seen as a potential threat to the long-standing Congress–DMK partnership, with the Dravidian party expressing dissatisfaction over what it describes as a “betrayal” of trust.
Reports indicate that the DMK has passed multiple internal resolutions criticising the Congress’s political strategy and questioning its commitment to the alliance. Senior DMK leader T.K.S. Elangovan was quoted as saying that “the INDIA Bloc is gone,” signalling deep frustration within the party ranks over recent developments. The Congress, however, has not formally responded to these claims of a breakdown in ties.

The evolving situation has added strain to the broader INDIA bloc, which already includes parties such as Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party. While these parties have historically maintained varying degrees of cooperation with the Congress, internal differences have often surfaced during state and national electoral cycles, creating uncertainty over the bloc’s long-term unity.
In Tamil Nadu, the Congress’s alleged pivot towards a potential alliance with TVK has further complicated its relationship with the DMK. Political observers note that while some sections within the Congress initially favoured aligning with Vijay’s emerging political outfit, the party had earlier chosen to maintain its alliance with the DMK before reconsidering its strategy after electoral developments.
Meanwhile, within the INDIA bloc, efforts appear to be underway to manage internal differences. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has reportedly adopted a more conciliatory approach towards the Trinamool Congress following electoral setbacks in West Bengal, while also criticising the ruling BJP over alleged electoral malpractice.
Political attention is now increasingly shifting towards the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, which are expected to be a key test for Opposition unity. The Congress and Samajwadi Party, which previously contested together in 2017, are yet to clarify whether they will maintain their alliance in the coming electoral cycle. As negotiations and alignments continue, the durability of the INDIA bloc remains under scrutiny, with its ability to hold together across diverse regional interests emerging as a critical factor in shaping India’s opposition politics in the years ahead.
