Incessant Rains Flood Northern Kerala, Disrupt Traffic

IMD had forecast extremely heavy rainfall, issuing a red alert for these districts

Heavy rainfall battered northern Kerala, particularly Kasaragod, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Wayanad, causing widespread flooding and traffic disruptions on Saturday morning. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast extremely heavy rainfall, issuing a red alert for these districts, but no casualties or major structural damage were reported, according to authorities.

Intense downpours persisted through Friday night, with a slight respite in the morning. Kozhikode district authorities are on high alert, ready to evacuate residents from high-range areas and those near waterbodies if needed. The state Agriculture Department reported a significant crop loss of Rs 44 crore in Kozhikode alone since May due to relentless rains.

The IMD’s Saturday morning forecast predicts moderate rainfall across all Kerala districts, accompanied by strong winds reaching up to 40 kmph in gusts. Earlier this year, northern Kerala faced similar challenges, with 2,300 people relocated to 42 relief camps in Wayanad and 25 vehicles stranded on the Muthanga National Highway due to flooding.
