Imran Khan Tells Sister About Health Concerns Linked To Prolonged Isolation At Hospital

Imran Khan discusses health issues from isolation.

Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan told his sister Uzma Khan that he was experiencing health complications because of prolonged solitary confinement, according to her account after meeting him at a hospital. Uzma said Khan had cited doctors while describing the impact of isolation and told her that the conditions amounted to mental torture. She shared the details during a press conference in Islamabad after meeting the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder on Thursday.

Khan was taken to a hospital following directions from Pakistan's Supreme Court, which had sought medical attention for the former premier after a report on his health was submitted by the superintendent of Adiala jail. Khan has been imprisoned at the Rawalpindi facility since August 2023 in connection with multiple legal cases. His prolonged detention and prison conditions have remained a major political issue in Pakistan, with his party and supporters repeatedly raising concerns about his health and treatment.

According to Uzma, Khan told her that doctors had linked his health difficulties to the isolation he had experienced in prison. She described solitary confinement as having a serious psychological impact on her brother and said he regarded the prolonged isolation as mental torture. Her comments came after she was able to meet Khan during his hospital visit and provide an account of his condition and what he told her.

The hospital transfer itself became a point of controversy after the Supreme Court issued directions concerning where Khan should receive medical attention. The court had directed the government to move him to Shifa International Hospital, a private medical facility in Islamabad, for a medical checkup and examination. However, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar later said Khan had instead been taken to the government-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

The difference between the court's direction and the facility ultimately used for Khan's examination prompted further attention from his supporters. Uzma's comments also brought renewed focus to the conditions under which the former prime minister has been held at Adiala jail. The prison has been the primary location of his detention since August 2023, while his legal cases have continued to generate political and judicial developments.

Khan's imprisonment has remained one of the most contentious issues in Pakistan's political landscape. His PTI has repeatedly raised concerns about his treatment in custody, while the government and authorities have maintained their own position regarding the legal proceedings against him. The former prime minister's health has periodically become a subject of public discussion, particularly when questions arise about access to medical care or restrictions on meetings and communication.

Uzma's account following Thursday's hospital visit has therefore added a new dimension to the debate over Khan's prison conditions. Her claim that Khan attributed his health problems to isolation and described its effects as mental torture is based on what she said he told her during their meeting. Meanwhile, the circumstances surrounding his transfer to PIMS, despite the Supreme Court's direction concerning Shifa International Hospital, have also drawn attention. Further medical assessments and official statements are expected to provide greater clarity on Khan's health condition and treatment.
