IAS Officer's Daughter Dies by Suicide After Dowry Harassment Claims in Andhra Pradesh
25-year-old found hanging at parental home months after alleging abuse by husband.
A 25-year-old woman, Madhuri Sahitibai, daughter of a serving IAS officer, was found hanging in the bathroom of her parental home in Tadepalli, Guntur district, on Sunday, police confirmed on Tuesday. Her parents broke open the locked door after she did not respond for a prolonged period and discovered her body. The Mangalagiri police have registered a case under Section 80 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to dowry deaths.
According to Mangalagiri DSP Murali Krishna, Madhuri had married Rajesh Naidu of Bugganapalli village in Nandyal district on March 5 this year after a love affair. The couple informed both families two days later and subsequently registered the marriage. She had earlier discontinued her B Tech course due to academic backlogs. The marriage initially appeared normal, but tensions surfaced within months.
A few months ago, Madhuri reportedly contacted her parents alleging severe dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws. Following the complaint, her parents brought her back to their residence in Tadepalli in the first week of September. Police said she had been living with her parents since then and had reportedly agreed to stay with them while the matter was being addressed.

The family stated that there were no immediate signs of distress in the days leading up to the incident, making the suicide unexpected. A detailed investigation is underway, including recording statements from the husband, in-laws, and other relatives. Post-mortem examination has been conducted, and the exact sequence of events is being ascertained.
Dowry harassment continues to remain a grave concern in several parts of the country despite stringent laws. Authorities have urged families facing similar issues to approach the police or counselling centres immediately. The case has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger enforcement of anti-dowry laws and societal awareness against the practice.
