Hyderabad Student Beaten After Revealing His Name at Dandiya Night

Student assaulted at Hyderabad Navratri event after revealing his name.

In a disturbing incident that has cast a shadow over the festive spirit of Navratri, a 25-year-old engineering student was allegedly assaulted at a Dandiya event in Hyderabad after disclosing his name, which indicated his Muslim background. The attack, which occurred on the night of September 29, 2024, at The Park Hotel near Raj Bhavan Chilla in the upscale Panjagutta area, highlights growing concerns over communal tensions infiltrating cultural celebrations. Nehan Ali Khan, the victim, was enjoying the Garba-Dandiya festivities with friends when the violence erupted, prompting swift police action and renewed scrutiny on guidelines issued by Hindu organizations to restrict entry based on community affiliations.

Khan, accompanied by his friend Karthikeya and a few others, had booked tickets earlier that evening and arrived at the venue around 8:00 PM to partake in the rhythmic dances and vibrant atmosphere typical of Navratri events. As the clock struck approximately 10:15 PM, the mood shifted dramatically when a group of unidentified individuals approached Khan amid the crowd. They inquired about his name, and upon hearing "Nehan Ali Khan"—a name unmistakably signaling his Muslim heritage—the assailants allegedly launched a sudden and vicious assault. Punches and blows rained down, forcing Khan to fight for his escape in the midst of the chaotic festivities, underscoring how a simple revelation could ignite communal prejudice in a space meant for joyous unity.

The backdrop to this violence includes recent advisories from various Hindu organizations urging event organizers to enforce strict entry protocols during Navratri celebrations. These groups, citing concerns over "cultural preservation," recommended verifying attendees' identities through Aadhaar cards, applying a tilak (a traditional Hindu forehead mark) as a prerequisite, and explicitly barring individuals from other communities. Such measures, disseminated via social media and community networks in the lead-up to the festival, aimed to create "Hindu-only" spaces for Garba and Dandiya events. Critics argue that these calls not only foster division but also risk escalating into real-world confrontations, as evidenced by Khan's ordeal, where the assailants appeared emboldened by this exclusionary rhetoric.

Fleeing the scene with injuries, Khan sought refuge with the help of patrolling officers and reached the Panjagutta Police Station to file a formal complaint. In his detailed FIR, he identified four of the attackers as Laxman, Deepak, Bharath, and Chandra Kanth, along with unnamed others, accusing them of unlawfully entering the Dandiya hall to perpetrate the assault. The police promptly registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those pertaining to criminal trespass, voluntarily causing hurt, and promoting enmity between groups. As investigations continue, authorities have vowed to apprehend the suspects and ensure a thorough probe, while community leaders from both sides have condemned the incident, calling for dialogue to prevent further polarization.

This episode serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of communal harmony during India's vibrant festival seasons. With Navratri 2024 drawing to a close, the assault on Khan has sparked widespread outrage on social media and among human rights advocates, who decry it as a blatant violation of secular ethos. As Hyderabad's law enforcement delves deeper, the incident underscores the urgent need for inclusive policies that safeguard all citizens' rights to participate in cultural events without fear of discrimination or violence, ensuring that festivities remain a celebration of diversity rather than a battleground for prejudice.
