Hyderabad Police Book 27 Ganesh Mandap Organisers Over DJ Use

Police say action was not targeted at any community.

Hyderabad Police have registered cases against organisers of 27 Ganesh mandapams in the Charminar zone for allegedly violating restrictions on the use of DJ systems during Ganesh festival processions. As part of the enforcement action, police seized 68 sound boxes and 21 amplifiers, while 51 organisers were called for counselling. Most of the cases were registered within the limits of the Hussaini Alam and Chatrinaka police stations.

The action followed an extensive monitoring exercise by Hyderabad Police during the festival. Officials used CCTV cameras, drones and special checking teams to identify organisers allegedly using prohibited DJ systems during processions. Around 2,500 Ganesh idols were installed across the Charminar zone, and police said nearly 99 per cent of organisers complied with the prescribed guidelines.

Hyderabad Police have prohibited the use of DJ sound systems, DJ mixers, sound amplifiers and other high-sound-generating equipment during religious processions. The restriction was notified by the Hyderabad City Police Commissioner under relevant provisions of the Hyderabad City Police Act and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The latest enforcement action was aimed at ensuring that the restrictions were followed during the festival processions.

Police said the action was not targeted at any particular religion or festival and that similar enforcement would be carried out against violations during religious processions irrespective of the community involved. Officials also referred to previous action during Milad-un-Nabi processions, including cases involving vehicles being operated without silencers and incidents of public nuisance, to underline that the restrictions were being applied across communities.

Officials said the enforcement effort focused primarily on the main organisers and those providing DJ systems. Police also said they sought to avoid unnecessary criminal proceedings against minors, students and others whom they believed should not be drawn into such cases. The approach, according to officials, was intended to enforce the notified restrictions while maintaining public order during large religious gatherings.

Hyderabad Police have warned organisers that further violations of the restrictions on DJ systems during processions will invite strict action. Authorities have cited noise pollution, public health concerns and difficulties in maintaining communication during large gatherings as reasons for restricting high-powered sound systems. Police also appealed to all communities to cooperate in maintaining peace, public order and Hyderabad’s traditional Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb.
