Hyderabad Police Arrest Two For Supplying Beef as Mutton to Hotels

Hyderabad police arrest two for selling beef as mutton.

Two men have been arrested in Hyderabad for allegedly supplying beef as goat meat (mutton) to hotels and restaurants in the city, police said. The arrests were made following a joint operation by the Hyderabad Food Adulteration Surveillance Team (H-FAST), the Central Crime Station (CCS), Food Safety Officers, a veterinary doctor and Habeeb Nagar Police. The alleged meat adulteration racket was uncovered during a raid conducted on July 1 at Osman Meat Shop in the Mallepally area.

The accused have been identified as Mohammad Usman and Mohammad Jahangir. According to police and food safety officials, the duo allegedly sold beef while misrepresenting it as mutton to commercial establishments across Hyderabad. During the raid, officials seized approximately 50 kilograms of beef, which was subsequently disposed of in accordance with established procedures. Authorities believe the case involves food adulteration and consumer fraud.

Police have registered a case against the accused and launched a detailed investigation to determine the scale of the alleged operation. Investigators are examining where the meat was supplied, identifying hotels and restaurants that may have received it and determining whether additional individuals or businesses were involved. Officials said further action would depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.

Speaking on the matter, Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand said legal proceedings had been initiated and that investigators were working to trace the distribution network linked to the seized meat. Food safety authorities are also expected to inspect establishments that may have purchased products from the accused to verify compliance with food safety regulations and identify any violations.

The incident has also sparked political reactions. MLA T. Raja Singh described the allegations as serious and claimed that customers ordering mutton dishes, including biryani, may have unknowingly been served beef if the allegations are proven. He called on the Telangana government, police and food safety authorities to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into all hotels and restaurants that may have sourced meat from the accused.

Authorities have urged the public not to draw conclusions until the investigation is completed, while assuring that strict action will be taken if the allegations are substantiated. The case has once again highlighted concerns over food adulteration and the importance of regular inspections to ensure food safety standards and protect consumer interests. Investigators are expected to question additional persons and review supply records as the probe continues.
