Huge Narcotics Consignment Seized on MTC Bus

Police seize huge drug haul, arrest two in Meghalaya.

Meghalaya police arrested two individuals and seized a massive drug consignment from a state-run Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) bus in East Jaintia Hills district on Tuesday. Acting on a tip-off, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force intercepted the bus, traveling from Silchar in Assam to Shillong, around 4 am. The search uncovered 10.35 kg of marijuana, 2,736 tramadol hydrochloride capsules, and approximately 6,000 nitrazepam tablets, marking a significant blow to drug trafficking in the region.

The arrested individuals, identified as Amol Nath, 42, from Silchar, and Radika Ranjan Das from Tripura’s Dholai district, are suspected of being part of an interstate narcotics smuggling syndicate. A senior police officer revealed that the duo’s activities point to a broader criminal network operating across state lines. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Lumshnong police station, and a thorough investigation is underway to uncover the syndicate’s operations and connections.

This seizure follows another major drug bust in the same district earlier this week, where three women from Manipur were arrested with heroin worth over Rs 4.4 crore, one of the largest drug hauls in Meghalaya’s recent history. The back-to-back operations highlight the state’s growing role as a transit point for illegal narcotics and the police’s intensified efforts to curb the menace. Authorities are now working to trace the source and intended destination of the drugs, as well as identify other members of the suspected syndicate.
