Himachal Rains Disrupt 134 Roads, Power and Water Supply

Heavy rainfall continued to affect several parts of Himachal Pradesh, disrupting transport and essential services as landslides and flash floods forced the closure of 134 roads across the state. According to official information, 78 electricity distribution transformers and 35 water supply schemes were also affected, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh weather alerts warning of more intense rainfall in the coming days.

The IMD's Shimla centre has issued an orange alert for July 28 to 30, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations across the state. In addition, a yellow alert remains in place for heavy rainfall in isolated areas on July 25 and 26. Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant as wet weather conditions are expected to persist.

The weather department has also warned of a low to moderate risk of flash floods in parts of Chamba, Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla and Sirmaur districts until Sunday morning. Officials cautioned that saturated soil and low-lying areas could experience waterlogging, inundation and further landslides if rainfall continues at the current intensity.

In Shimla, heavy rain during the evening caused drains to overflow, with rainwater flowing onto roads and disrupting traffic movement at several locations. Local authorities monitored vulnerable areas as commuters faced delays due to water accumulation and reduced visibility during periods of intense rainfall.

The continuing spell of monsoon rain has also affected essential public services in several districts. Damage to electricity distribution infrastructure resulted in power outages, while disruptions to water supply systems impacted residents in affected areas. Restoration work has been initiated, although officials said repairs depend on improvements in weather conditions and access to damaged sites.

The state administration has urged people to avoid unnecessary travel in landslide-prone regions and to follow weather advisories issued by the IMD. Emergency teams remain on alert as authorities continue to monitor the situation, with the possibility of additional rainfall posing a risk of further road closures, flash floods and disruptions to essential services across Himachal Pradesh.
