Two women, including a 27-year-old Israeli tourist, were allegedly gangraped near Sanapur Lake in Hampi on Thursday night, police reported. The horrific incident unfolded around 11 pm as the victims, along with three male tourists, were stargazing by the canal after dinner.
The group included a 29-year-old homestay operator, who hosted the Israeli tourist and male companions from the United States, Odisha, and Maharashtra. While they enjoyed music under the stars, three men on a motorcycle approached, asking for petrol. When told none was available, the trio demanded Rs 100. Refusal sparked verbal abuse, escalating into violence.
Police said the assailants, who spoke Kannada and Telugu, raped the homestay operator and the Israeli tourist. The three male tourists were pushed into the canal—two sustained injuries, while the Odia tourist remains missing. The women are receiving medical care.
Based on the homestay operator’s complaint, Gangavathi Rural Police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, charging the suspects with gangrape, extortion, robbery with intent to cause grievous hurt, and attempted murder. “We’ve identified the suspects and formed six teams to apprehend them,” a senior officer stated. The attack has sent shockwaves through Hampi, a UNESCO heritage site popular with tourists.
